Chapter 1: The New Girls

It was a beautiful late-summer morning in New York City in late August. The early morning sun cast warm rays upon the city as a somewhat warm and cold breeze fluttered through the air. At this time, around 7:30 am, five young mutant girls were waiting at the bus stop. These girls’ names were Jade, Jane, Scarlet, Angie and Kate, and all five girls were seventeen-years old.

Jade was a pretty mutant cat with brown fur, one long tuft of fur that dangled down one side of her face, a long white tail that’s tipped with black and chocolate brown eyes. She wore a black strapless crop top, knee-length jean shorts and snowy-white boots.

Jane was the oldest of the girls. She was a mutant dingo with pale brown fur and sky-blue eyes. She wore a green T-Shirt, brown capris and black-and-white sneakers.

Scarlet was a mutant goat with very, very pale gray—almost white—and black fur and amber eyes. She wore a dark red crop top with short sleeves, jean short and dark gray tennis shoes.

Angie was a mutant mouse and a little shorter than the other girls. She had gray fur and dark brown eyes. She had on a short-sleeved dark purplish-blue shirt, tan jeans, white sneakers and a white headband.

Kate was the youngest of the five and Jane’s sister. She was a mutant dingo like Jane, expect her fur was a darker shade of brown and her eyes were icy-blue. She had on a long-sleeved pint shirt, a hot pink knee-length skirt and flat silver boots.

It was their first day at their new high school, Mutagenic High. It was their senior year and their first time at Mutagenic High, and actually their first year at an actual high school.

After the girls graduated fifth grade years ago, they had taken free online schools. Why did they do this, you ask? All five girls live in a cheap, shabby house together. Jade, Scarlet and Angie’s mothers and fathers all died with they were little; Kate and Jane’s mother adopted them. But she died of cancer when all girls were ten-years-old, at the beginning of their fifth grade year. The school agreed to cover their bills and taxes until each girl turned sixteen-years-old and they were able to get jobs.

The girls were poor and didn’t have a lot of money, though they tried their best to get along. Jade held two jobs on the weekend—one at Eileen’s Hair & Nail Saloon from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and the other at Rosie’s Delicious Donuts from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. While Jane, Kate and Angie all worked on weekdays as waitresses at Evelyn’s Café from 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm. And though Scarlet didn’t have a job, she had ways of getting the girls food, clothes and other needs; Scarlet was thief and once every week if they didn’t have enough things, Scarlet would sneak into stores in the middle of the night, deactivate the security systems for a few hours and steal only the things that she and the other girls needed.

Because the girls were so poor and had to be extremely careful with their money, they couldn’t afford to do fun things like other teenagers, like going to the movies, play sports or video games, or even go on small shopping sprees. Since their old school still helped to pay for their bills and taxes, they only spent the money they made on food, clothing, personal hygiene needs and books for education.

Over the summer, all five girls finally managed to earn enough money for all of them to go to Mutagenic High for their senior year. Mutagenic High agreed to pay for their bills and taxes like their old school did, but the girls were on their own from there.

Jane sighed. “So…it’s our first high school year…Do you think it’ll be a good one?”

“I hope so,” Angie admitted, then sighed. “Though I certainly hope that none of the other students will make fun of us for being poor.”

“Yeah, well, at least we have jobs,” Scarlet said as she shrugged. “A lot of kids, even high school seniors, don’t have jobs.”

“You’ve got a point there.” Jade admitted.

Within a few minutes, the bus arrived. It was a large yellow school bus with the number 46 on it. It stopped in in front of their stop and the door opened up, revealing a male mutant rabbit with dark brown fur, blonde hair and blue eyes sitting on the driver’s seat.

“Hello, young ladies,” he greeted warmly. “Are you heading to Mutagenic High School?”

“Yes, sir,” Kate nodded, smiling optimistically.

“Well, then, come aboard.” The rabbit said kindly.

Jade, Jane, Scarlet, Angie and Kate all climbed on the stairs and into the bus. There were several other mutants on the bus, and the girls all sat in two seats side-by-side—Jade, Jane and Kate in one seat, and Scarlet and Angie in the other one.

Jade sighed quietly and looked up at Kate. “You know, I really hope that we’ll meet some nice mutants at Mutagenic High.”

“So do I,” Kate nodded in agreement. “So do I.”

On another bus, just a few miles away from the girls’ bus, was another school bus with the number 18 on it. The bus was also headed to Mutagenic High. On the bus were five males—four turtles and one Werevel, a biological creature between a werewolf and a lizard. The turtles were all quadruplet brothers and the Werevel was their best friend.

“I heard that five new girls are transferring to our school.” Donnie, one of the turtles, spoke up to Mikey, one of the other turtles, next to him.

“Really?” Mikey asked, looking up curiously.

“Yeah,” Donnie nodded, the turned his head to the window to his right. “I wonder if they’ll be in any of our class, and what they’re like.”

“Well, I just hope they’re not like all the other snobby females at our school.” Raph, one of the other brothers, scoffed, not looking up from the pop star magazine he was reading.

“They’ll most likely be,” Turret, the Werevel, said. “After all, almost every other girl at our school are just rude snobs that think they’re better than everyone.”

“Yeah, well, at least Vee and Metal aren’t snobs,” Leo, the oldest turtle, said with a shrug. “They’re very nice.” Vee and Metal were also Werevels like Turret, and they were both very nice to the boys. They were even their best friends.

Turret sighed. “Well, it’s Monday, and they’re coming today, so we got all week to figure out what they’re like.”

The bus arrived in front of Mutagenic High within a minute or two; their bus was always the first to arrive. Mutagenic High was a very large school that reached to the height of a five-story house. The turtles and the Werevel all jumped off the bus and walked towards the school entrance.

Leo was the oldest of the four turtles. He had forest-green skin, blue eyes and wore a darker blue mask around his eyes. He was wearing an expensive long-sleeved blue T-Shirt, black jeans and blue-and-white sneakers.

Raph was the second born. He had forest-green skin like Leo, expect he had emerald-green eyes and wore a red mask. Raph was wearing a short sleeved shirt, tan cargo shorts and red sneakers.

Donnie was the third born/second youngest. He had on a purple mask, reddish-brown eyes and had a gap-toothed smile. He was wearing an elbow-length purple shirt, blue jeans and very, very dark purple tennis shoes.

Mikey was the youngest of the four. He had an orange mask, baby-blue eyes and freckles plastered on his cheeks. He wore a short-sleeved orange shirt, dark blue jeans and black-and-orange shoes.

Turret had brown fur and darker brown eyes, but he was also short and chubby. He had on a long-sleeved dark green shirt, black jeans and gray sneakers.

The turtles and Turret’s families were very rich families. The turtles’ mother was a very famous movie actress and their father was a teacher of the most popular Ninjitsu School in the country. Turret’s mother was a doctor, though his father was dead.

Once the boys entered the building, they each climbed about three flights of stairs to get to the fourth floor, where the senior classes were held. The boys went up to their lockers, which all happened to be close together.

“Hey, guys. What’s up?”

The turtles and Werevel all smiled and looked up as they heard a familiar female voice. Vee and Metal were walking towards them.

Vee was a female Werevel with brown fur and blue eyes. She wore a black T-Shirt, jean shorts and gray basketball shoes.

Metal was also a female Werevel with slightly darker brown fur and violet eyes. She wore a long-sleeved gray shirt, black jeans and very dark red high heels; she wore a little bit of makeup, but only dark purple eyeshadow.

“Morning, Vee. Hi, Metal,” Leo greeted as he grabbed his math book from his locker. “We’ve been good. What about you girls?”

Metal simply shrugged. “Fine, the weekend’s been good for both of us.”

“That’s nice.”

Everyone turned at a familiar male voice, causing both Leo, Turret and Vee to scowl angrily, and Mikey and Metal to smile happily at the sight of their best friend.

Dusk was a Werevel like Turret, Vee and Metal, except he had silver-gray fur and dark emerald-green eyes. He had on a gray T-Shirt, a black leather jacket, dark blue jeans and black-and-white basketball shoes; he also had black sunglasses on top of his head.

Dusk was Mikey and Metal’s best friend; he had been ever since they met at the beginning of their freshmen year. But he was also hated by Turret, Vee and Leo; Vee was his ex-girlfriend and, Turret and Leo were his former best friends.

“’Sup, Dusk?” Metal said as she went up to the other Werevel and fist bumped with him. “How’s the weekend been?”

“Oh, you know, it’s had its ups and down.” Dusk sighed out the answer as he shrugged simply.

Turret snorted quietly in anger and pulled his notebook out of his locker before slamming it shut. Leo and Vee did the exact same, then the three angry creatures headed towards their first classes, leaving behind their friends/family.

Metal rolled her eyes. “Drama queens,” she sighed in annoyance, the turned back to the Werevel in front of her. “Come on, Dusk; let’s get to class.”

Dusk said nothing, only sighed and grabbed his things out of his locker before heading to his first class, science, with Metal, Donnie and Mikey.

Once they were in their class, sitting with all the other students in the room, the bell rang and the science teacher, Ms. Nilly—a female mutant bat with rose-gold fur, violet eyes and dark silver wings—tapped her ruler on her desk a few times to gain every student’s attention.

“Good morning, class,” Ms. Nilly said once they were all quiet and looking up at her. “Now, before we begin today’s lesson, I have an announcement to make. We have five new students here today, so please be nice to them and make them feel welcome.” Once she finished speaking, she stood up and opened the door, letting five girls—a cat, two dingoes, a goat and a mouse—inside the classroom.

Ms. Nilly smiled warmly at the new girls and turned to the rest of the class. “Everyone, this is Jade, Jane, Scarlet, Angie and Kate.”

Everyone in the class started to talk and greet the five new girls, expect Dusk, who was remaining silent as he stared at one of the girls. His eyes were wide, his heart suddenly started beating faster and his face was turning red. Jade, the cat, had to be one of the most gorgeous females he had ever seen.

If he didn’t know any better, Dusk would think his was what people called “love at first sight”.
